Argentina vacations: Wine Tasting in Cayafate

Located in the province of Salta, in the center of the Calchaquies Valley, the little and charming town of Cayafate is a great wine tasting destination in Argentina, for travelers who enjoy exploring nature, discovering new cultures, and extend their culinary horizons. This region is especially known for the quality and originality of the wines produced there. A must do on your Argentina holidays, especially for wine enthusiats!

The name Cafayate doesn't quite have the same ring as Mendoza, but this is the only thing that the more famous wine making region of Buenos Aires has over Cafayate. Nestled in spectacular scenery, this quaint town, although experiencing somewhat of a tourist boom, is still relatively off the beaten path, and perfect for those who wish to avoid the crowds. Enjoying a quiet and relaxing time while tasting some excellent wine and food, what more could you ask for?

Cafayate is known for Torrontes, a white wine variety closely identified with the region. Upon first sniff, the Torrontes aroma is immediately unmistakable as jasmines, peaches, roses and bits of citrus hints wrap around your nostrils. These flavors provide such an aromatic and fresh scent that you would almost think you are about to drink something sweet, and not wine. Refreshing and unique in its savors, the understated Torrontes is rapidly becoming a favorite among wine enthusiasts.

There are several excellent wineries that offer tours and wine tasting sessions in the area. With a production dating back to the mid-1800s, the Bodegas Etchart is one of the oldest and most famous in the region. Taking of tour of the winery, you will get the chance to understand the precepts of wine making in Cafayate as well as sample several varieties of wine. Wines are delicious of course but be careful not to have too much or you won't make it to the other wineries.

A small organic winery, the Bodega Nanni runs its winemaking operations right in the center of Cafayate. Other excellent wineries to visit for a wine tasting afternoon include El Transito, El Porvenir, and Bodega San Pedro de Yacochuya.
